What makes Artoholic Singapore: A Self-Guided Audio Tour a unique experience ?
The National Museum is the place to find out about the official narrative of Singapore’s history. It houses the Singapore History Gallery, as well as the Singapore Living Galleries, which focuses on food, fashion, photography, fashion, film and wayang.
Unlike the National Museum, the Singapore Art Museum or SAM’s focus is really on contemporary art practice, particularly that of Singapore and the South East Asian region.
At The Institute of Contemporary Arts you’ll find engaging showcases of emerging and established artists with strong curatorial depth, as well as cutting edge research on contemporary art and its development in Asia.
The National Design Centre building has been used as a convent, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the Chinese Opera Institute. The Centre hosts regular talks, film screenings, and weekend pop-up markets, and is now the focal point for all things design.
The Objectifs Centre for Photography and Film has been occupied by an arts non-profit called Sculpture Square for the previous 15 years. The building consists of a gallery, a retail space, a studio, a workshop space and an outdoor courtyard area for events.
The Nanyang Academy of Fine Art or NAFA opened its doors in 1938 to only 14 students of Fine Art. Today, NAFA has become a full-fledged arts institution, well-known in Singapore and the region.
Lasalle College of the Arts was founded by Brother Joseph McNally in 1984. He originally funded most of it himself. The ethos of the college is strongly practice-led and industry-focused, with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary collaboration.
The centre is named after the late Jacob Ballas, a successful stock broker and prominent member of the Jewish community. It’s the hub of Jewish life in Singapore, and houses the rabbi and his family.
The Substation is Singapore’s first independent contemporary arts space. It was founded by legendary arts doyenne Kuo Pao Kun in 1990. It used to be a power sub-station, but today it’s considered a safe space for experimental and multi-disciplinary works.
